Sometimes a girl just needs to kick back, relax, grab a beer and watch the game – which is exactly why my friend Julia and I stopped into Gecko’s on a Saturday night.

Gecko’s Bar and Grille, located on Hertel near Norwalk, is the ideal spot to cheer for your favorite teams, drink to celebrate a win or even drink to forget a loss. The bar was packed with football fans, hockey fans, basketball fans, all types of sports enthusiasts.

We didn’t look out of place, though, since we blended in perfectly with the mid-20s and older crowd. Girls in leather coats chatted in the corners, and larger groups gathered around the two dart boards and pool table. Laughing, cheering and chit-chatting was all around us. Some guys were discussing their latest fantasy football stats and women caught up with their friends, while Julia and I reminisced about the last time we went out together. The lively vibe all around grew as the night went on.

We thought about ordering one of the drafts on tap priced from only $3.25 to $4.25, but we needed something a little bit stronger. A round of Long Islands later, we almost forgot the Sabres’ loss earlier in the night.

Gecko’s gives its patrons something to cheer for, though, even if our hockey team doesn’t. Bottled beers also range from $3.25 to $4.25 and include domestics such as Labatt, Blue Light, Blue Light Lime, Budweiser and Bud Light. Other draft choices are Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Blue Moon, Guinness and Redds.

Mixed drinks are made with liquors such as Wild Turkey, Malibu, Jim Beam, Pinnacle Gummy and several Three Olives flavors. Well drinks are $3, call are $3.75, and premium are $6.25.

After the college football game was over, the jams started busting through the speakers. Some girls ended their chatter and start movin’ to the music, including me and Julia. Anything from Rihanna to Biggie can be heard at Gecko’s, and if there is something you want to hear, you can make requests on the digital jukebox.

Gecko’s has a generous amount of weekly specials. Wednesdays are “Labatt Wednesdays,” which include a bucket of five Labatt drinks for only $10. Thursday is “Pint Night,” which offers $1.50 selected pints from 8 p.m. to midnight. Gecko’s also offers the Labatt bucket deal during Bills and Sabres games.

If you’re looking to complement your beer with a burger or wings, Gecko’s serves delicious bar food, with items costing no more than $10. The kitchen is open until 2 a.m. daily.

Every other Saturday, there is a DJ spinning with no cover charge at the door.

Whether you want to catch the game with your guys or your girls, dance, play pool or play darts, Gecko’s is a fun and affordable place to be.
