With summer upon us, trips to the Southtowns beaches are sure to be in the mix.
Undoubtedly, you’ll reach your quota of dogs and burgers. Luckily, Tacos & More along Route 5 can fill the void. While it’s closest to Hamburg Town Beach (permit required) and Woodlawn, it’s a short ride from Angola.
Located in a makeshift plaza, the place is tiny, with a few indoor tables and picnic tables in the summer. Lake Erie shimmers brightly across the busy road.
The beef burrito ($3.99/$5.99) included a layer of refried beans. The carnitas ($2.39/$4.29) contained hunks of nice, chewy pork. A chorizo taco uses the spicy sausage ($2.39/$4.29/$5.79). Fajitas come chicken ($4.75) or steak ($5.50). Taco salads run $4.75-$6.75. Quesadillas are $2.59-$4.89.
The sub selection (hot and cold) is huge, with prices from $4.49 for a half to $9.50 for a whole. Did we mention they have pizza, too? Personal, small, medium and large. Personal starts at about $4 for cheese, a small cheese runs $7.75. There’s variety, too. Specialty pies include white, fajita (steak or chicken), supreme, taco and even Hawaiian style with ham and pineapple.
How about a fruit-filled taco ($2.19) for dessert? Or ice cream (soft or hard)? Choose from cones ($2.39-$3.69), shakes ($3.89-$4.79), floats ($3.69-$4.89) and something called a Nut Buster ($3.19). Italian ice ($1.49-$2.39). A banana split tops out at $6.49. For cheapies, there are Flying Saucers (99 cents) and Freeze Pops (25 cents).
How does this tiny hole-in-the-wall do it? “If you don’t see it, just ask,” the cook said. “If I can make it, you can have it.” Good to know.
A frugal feast of bad (good) food can be had, along with a side of summer memories.
