The members show rendition of an art exhibition is the visual equivalent of a variety show – a merry jumble of styles, colors and media. One cannot predict what artists will submit to show off an example of a new body of work, a one-off artful experiment, or an older and familiar piece.

Venerable Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, founded in 1974 by a small group of artists (including superstar photographer Cindy Sherman), holds its annual Members Show in summer.

The show not only fills a slot during what is classically a slow time on the international art calendar before the splash of September openings, but acts as a membership drive. Anyone hankering for a bit of exposure may join the organization when dropping off work.

All current members of Hallwalls dropped off work for incusion in the show to the attention of Visual Arts Curator John Massier by July 15. Then more than 100 pieces were magically hung by staff and interns throughout the gallery for the opening from 7 to 10 p.m. July 18. This always is a huge social event with wine, cheese, and after-parties.

The show remains on view through Aug. 29. Hallwalls is open Tuesdays through Saturdays and is located in famed Asbury Hall in Babeville (341 Delaware Ave.). Visit www.hallwalls.org
