Transit police responding to reports of marijuana at the Utica Rail Station Monday night charged two people with criminal possession of a firearm after a handgun was discovered in the purse of one suspect, police said.

Police were called to 1391 Main St. shortly before 6:30 p.m. to investigate a man and woman smoking and selling marijuana inside the rail station, Transit Police reported.

Upon police questioning, the woman reportedly reached into her coat and removed a plastic bag of marijuana, handing it to Officer John Popp.

Police said her companion then told Officer Shawn McDonnell: “It’s mine. Take me to jail for it.”

After being taken into custody, the woman’s purse was searched and police said they found a loaded .22 caliber firearm with eight rounds of ammunition, including one spent shell casing and seven live rounds. The serial number on the weapon had been defaced, police added.

Daishania D. Ferguson, 19, and Maurice L. Brown, 21, both of Cambridge Avenue were each arrested and charged with criminal possession of a loaded defaced firearm and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police recovered the handgun with one spent casing and $305.

Detective Craig Palladino submitted the evidence to Transit Authority Police Headquarters.
