A Wheatfield motel was heavily damaged by a fire early this morning.

Firemen were called to the Anchor Motel, 2232 River Road, at 12:52 a.m. after receiving a report of heavy smoke coming from the roof of the structure, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reported.

When firemen arrived, the roof was in flames above several of the rooms. Deputies checked all 19 rooms at the motel and evacuated people from five of them. No one was injured.

Several Niagara County fire companies responded to the scene. The Red Cross was called in to assist those who were staying in the motel.

The fire remains under investigation by the Niagara County Origin & Cause Unit.
