BPO gets Grammy nods
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has a small share in the glory in three Grammy nominations announced this week.
Nominated for a Grammy in the Best Classical Vocal Performance category is soprano Hila Plitman, for her singing of John Corigliano’s “Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan” on a recording made with the BPO and Music Director JoAnn Falletta in March 2007. Corigliano, too, is up for a Grammy through this recording. The piece was nominated in the category of Best Classical Contemporary Composition.
Also, the category of Best Engineered Classical Album includes a nomination for recording engineer John Newton for his work on the BPO’s recording of music by Ottorino Respighi, including “Church Windows,” “Brazilian Impressions” and “Rossiniana.” That disc was recorded in 2006 at Kleinhans Music Hall.
Both discs were released on the Naxos label, with whom the BPO has an ongoing recording engagement.
This is the first time the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has been connected with recordings nominated for Grammys.
Buffalo also distinguished itself in the polka category. Jerry Darlak and the Touch won a nomination for Best Polka Album for their latest CD, “Back to Back Hall of Fame Polkas.”
