Westfeldt says ‘I Do’ to Hallmark
In her new television movie, Jennifer Westfeldt plays a woman who, 10 years earlier, had entered a disastrous marriage with a two-timer. In real life, Westfeldt met the man of her dreams about 10 years ago — “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm — and they couldn’t be happier.
In “Before You Say ‘I Do,’ ” a Hallmark Channel Original Movie premiering at 9 p. m. Saturday — Valentine’s Day — Westfeldt stars as Jane Gardner, who won’t marry her boyfriend, George (David Sutcliffe), though they love each other deeply. Jane has soured on marriage after her first painful experience.
In the romantic comedy, which features Lauren Holly as Jane’s best friend, George is catapulted back in time. He has but three days to stop the love of his life from making the mistake of her life.
Westfeldt loves the story but is anything but eager for time travel. She sometimes wishes she had spent a little more time with people who aren’t around today, but that’s about all.
“You live and learn from your mistakes, but I don’t know that I would ever want to return to the past to do something over,” she said. “I really have no regrets.”
“Besides,” she added, “all the experiences you have make up who you are now.”
Right now Westfeldt is an actress and screenwriter whose services are increasingly in demand. Ten years ago, she starred in the sitcom “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.” Since then, the Connecticutborn, Yale-educated actress was nominated for a Tony (a revival of “Wonderful Town” in 2004), won an Independent Spirit Award (for co-writing “Kissing Jessica Stein”) and starred in the TV comedy “Notes From the Underbelly.”
Westfeldt happens to have a fine singing voice, as well. At Yale, she sang with the a cappella group, Redhot & Blue.
She met her beau Jon Hamm, Golden Globe winner for the TV drama “Mad Men,” when she cast him in her off-Broadway production “Lipschtick.”
While the Hallmark Channel premieres “Before You Say, ‘I Do’,” Westfeldt says she and Hamm will be enjoying a cozy romantic dinner. Maybe even opening something shiny in a small box.
“I’m not sure about the best Valentine’s Day gift I ever received,” she said. “Jon bought me some really pretty jewelry, but I just can’t remember if he gave it to me on Valentine’s Day.”
