Two local galleries are the site of special exhibits marking the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and a local theater group will present a musical performance that references the events, followed by an audience discussion.

Sunday, CEPA Gallery will unveil a large-scale memorial piece called “Requiem,” which it commissioned and displayed for the first anniversary of the attacks.

The piece, conceived and produced by Tatana Kellner, consists of 46 sheer white fabric banners, printed with names of the victims and photos originally published by the New York Times in its “Portraits of Grief” series.

The flowing banners, 16 feet long and 4 feet wide, are arranged in twin columns spaced 2 feet apart. They fill the three-story atrium of the Market Arcade building, 617 Main St., and are illuminated by light filtered through the arcade’s glass roof.

“I think as time passes, people’s memories become more about the event itself, or personal recollections of where you might have been or how you experienced or heard about the event, and less about the people,” said Sean Donaher, CEPA director. “This piece brings that right back to the forefront, that these were nearly 3,000 individual people who lost their lives, and I think that comes through very strongly, and that’s why people are so moved by it.

“It’s gorgeous, which might seem a bit contradictory to say about a memorial piece,” said Donaher. “But it’s beautiful. And it was made specifically for this space, and it fills it perfectly, so when you walk in, without grasping the meaning of the piece, you are visually, aesthetically drawn to it, and it’s striking in its architecture.”

“Requiem” will be on display daily from Sunday through Nov. 1.

• The Burchfield Penney Art Center’s grand foyer is the site of a free display of artifacts from the attacks on the World Trade Center that day, which killed 2,753 people. The artifacts include a wrecked Port Authority Police SUV, the dedication plaque from one of the towers and a case of smaller items, including various keys and the brass coupling from a fire hose.

The display is one of 30 “New York Remembers” exhibits dispersed across the state by the New York State Museum in Albany and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in lower Manhattan.

A similar display at the Conference Center of Niagara Falls, 101 Old Falls St., will be open to the public this weekend. Artifacts there include part of an engine from one of the airplanes that struck the towers and some aluminum sheathing from the exterior of one of the buildings.

Both displays include a timeline explaining the events of the day. Admission to both is free.

Two other nearby exhibits in “New York Remembers” can be seen in the Jamestown Municipal Building, 200 E. Third St., and Batavia’s City Hall, 1 Batavia City Centre.

•Finally, this week, O’Connell and Company (6205 Main St., Williamsville) opened William Finn’s song cycle, “Elegies,” which runs through Oct. 2.

Sunday’s performance, which begins at 2:30 p. m., will be followed by a talk with the audience, titled “Healing Hearts,” led by Monsignor J. Patrick Keleher, director of Catholic Campus Ministries at the UB Newman Center.

“Elegies,” an all-music performance written by Finn, who did the music and lyrics for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and “Falsettos,” focuses on the loss of loved ones. The final segment of the show explores the emotional aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Tickets are $25 general admission. For information, visit oconnellandcompany.com or call 848-0800 or 270-5947.
