He’s called Dwayne Johnson now.
No more The Rock. Not even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. There’s no need for the actor to use his former wrestling persona so moviegoers know who he is. Since his acting debut as the title character in the 2002 blockbuster “The Scorpion King,” Johnson has settled into an acting career that, surprisingly, isn’t playing all muscle-bound tough guys. In fact, Mr. Johnson can be quite endearing when he is cast as the rough on the outside/nice on the inside guy opposite a kid or two.
In “Race to Witch Mountain” (Disney, available now) Johnson plays Jack Bruno, a cab driver who picks up two teen siblings who aren’t quite what they appear to be. It’s a re-imagining of the 1975 Disney family film “Escape to Witch Mountain” (and its 1978 sequel) about kids from another planet who are sought by people who want their special powers for nefarious reasons. This time, the bad guys are shadowy government agents. There’s also a Terminator-like assassin and messages about the environment thrown into the mix.
AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig play the mysterious Sara and Seth; the always-interesting Ciaran Hinds is the government bad-die; and Carla Gugino is the slightly daffy scientist and love interest.
The 6-year-old I watched the film with found it dark and scary at first (his 10-year-old brother was fine). The movie lightened up enough — with plenty of laughs at the expense of attendees of a UFO convention — to be enjoyed by all. The boys were inquisitive about how the effects were done (especially the teen’s special powers). I told them we could watch the extras and find out — but I lied. The bonus features are surprisingly scant.
The two-disc DVD ($44.95) and Blu-ray combo pack ($51.99) each have some deleted scenes with commentary by director Andy Fickman and some bloopers. The Blu-ray also has a standard DVD and digital copy, plus a “Backstage Disney” look at the two original “Witch Mountain” movies. The movie is also available as a single-disc DVD ($35.99).
Here are a few names for classic movie buffs: Jean Arthur, Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne, Fred MacMurray and Herbert Marshall. Intrigued? You should be. Those are just some of the people found in the eight films included on “Icons of Screwball Comedy Volume 1” and “Volume 2” ($24.96 each, Warner Home Video, available now).
Each two-disc set has four movies. Though they may not all be widely recognized titles, they are worth watching and besides, the sets are a bargain.
In “Volume 1,” the delightful Arthur stars in “If You Could Only Cook” (with Marshall) and “Too Many Husbands” (with MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas). Russell stars in “She Wouldn’t Say Yes” and “My Sister Eileen.”
“Volume 2” has Dunne in her Oscar-nominated role in “Theodora Goes Wild” and in “Together Again,” her third film with Charles Boyer. Loretta Young is showcased in “A Night to Remember” with Brian Aherne, and “The Doctor Takes a Wife” with Ray Milland.
It is, to this day, the most famous hip swing in pop culture history. Elvis Presley’s wild hip gyrations and raw sexuality shocked TV audiences when he appeared on the “Ed Sullivan Show” in 1956. The King returned a month later and then again — this time he was filmed from the waist up only. The performances are captured in “Elvis: The Ed Sullivan Show — The Classic Performances” ($14.98, Image Entertainment, available now), along with a bunch of special features including “Remembering Ed and Elvis” and “Special Elvis Moments.”
Coming Tuesday
“Alien Trespass” (Roadside), “The Art of War III: Retribution” (Sony), “The Class” (Sony), “Gigantic” (Vivendi Entertainment), “I Love You, Man” (Paramount), “17 Again” (New Line), “Katyn” (Koch Lorber), “London to Brighton” (Koch Lorber), “Paris 36” (Sony).
