Architecture and wine
Heron Hill Winery, 9301 Country Route 76, and a member of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail, has been named by Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the world’s 10 most spectacular tasting rooms, thus keeping company with the likes of Opus One in the Napa Valley and Chateau Haut-Brion in France.
Here’s what the magazine said: “Overlooking Keuka Lake in upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region, Heron Hill Winery references Greek Revival and traditional farm architecture (both of which can be found in abundance throughout the area). The cobblestone floors of the airy, vaulted-ceiling Tasting Hall, where Rieslings and Chardonnays along with a selection of reds are poured, came from the nearby Hammondsport quarry.”
The new facility was designed by New York City architect Charles Warren in 1999 and it is really stunning. For more information and a photo, take a look at

The Field & Fork Network is planning some interesting activities at the Williamsville Farmers’ Market this summer, geared toward teaching the wonders of locally grown produce.
On Aug. 29, the subject will be heirloom tomatoes. Learn why they taste so good and how to grow them. Richard Price, also known as the Tomato Man, the owner of Faerie Garden Seeds, will answer questions.
And keep Oct. 24 in mind, when the topic of discussion will be New York State apples.
