Don’t be ashamed if you’ve never heard of the artist Chuck Tingley. The Buffalo State College art major is just getting his start on the local art scene. His first solo show, a collection of paintings called “Emotional Effusion,” opens tonight in 464 Gallery (464 Amherst St.) and runs through Thursday. Tingley’s paintings, a fusion of realistic portraiture and abstraction, is meant to capture the visual expression of human psychological states. In his work you can find the usual emotional suspects—fear, outrage, sadness— along with more subtle states of mind, from ennui to quiet desperation. Tingley calls his latest body of work, “an exploration of an unrestrained outpouring of feelings, thoughts and behavior.” He continues, “My paintings go beyond the skin to evoke certain emotions. Through paint, I explore the physical characteristics of an individual and dig deeper to get to and express one’s core emotions.” A reception gets under way at 6 tonight.
