Bicycle enthusiasts and filmmakers Marc Moscato and David Gracon spent the summer of 2009 on a bike tour of the Pacific Northwest. They brought with them a robust collection of film and video works by Buffalo-based artists, and wherever they stopped— Tacoma, Seattle, Portland, Olympia and other cities— they held a screening of the work. By all accounts, the tour was a success, bringing the talents of Buffalo’s many established and fringe filmmakers to an entirely new audience. And now, the duo has returned home to finish the tour, this time sans bikes. They’ll present a screening called “Tough Stuff From the Buff: Experimental&Activist Video from the Fringes of Buffalo, NY” at 8 p. m. Saturday in Sugar City (19 Wadsworth Ave.). The screening includes work by a range of artists, from the well-known Critical Art Ensemble and University at Buffalo professor Tony Conrad to lesser known talents such as Stephanie Gray, Terry Cuddy, and Moscato and Gracon themselves. “Out of the post-industrial ghost-lands of Buffalo, NY, a media scene has emerged with an urgency, tradition and aesthetic all its own. With roots in early media activism of the 1970s, and supported by a network of artist-run initiatives, the city has only recently started to become recognized for its lo-fi, experimental and, above all, uncompromising body of film and video,” Moscato writes in his statement about the show. Sugar City asks for a $3 donation for the screening. For more information, visit tuffstuffbuff. wordpress.com.
