The American Repertory Theatre of Western New York Inc.—perhaps our city’s most elaborately titled theater company—is launching its three-play season this week with a production of the comedy “Greater Tuna.” The 1981 comedy, by writers Ed Howard, Jaston Williams and Joe Sears, is set in the teeny-tiny town of Tuna, Texas. It features just two actors (in this case, Thomas LaChiusa and Christopher Standart) in more than 20 roles and at least that number of madcap situations having to do with the vagaries of small-town life. Tom Dooney directs the show.

Though a relative newcomer to the Western New York theater scene, ART has made ripples with popular productions of such shows as “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and Tennessee Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo.” For this production, the company has relocated from its previous home base in Elmwood Avenue’s TheatreLoft to the Main Street Cabaret (672 Main St.), an intimate space formerly favored by Buffalo United Artists.
