After a five-year hiatus, Vertical Horizon is back with a new album, “Burning the Days,” and a fall tour, which brings the band to the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.) for a 7 p. m. show on Monday. Though the group rose to prominence with 1999’s “Everything You Want”—by this point, a record that has gone platinum twice over—Vertical Horizon was one of many victims of the major label record industry’s collapse at the turn of the century. By the time the group was ready to build on the success of “Everything You Want” with its follow-up, “Go,” record labels had pretty much given up on promoting anything other than guaranteed gazillion-sellers. “Go” was a strong album, but it got lost in the shuffle. Which may be why singer/guitarist/songwriter Matt Scannell decided to take some time away from the industry. Apparently, that time off served the band well, for “Burning the Days” is the most ambitious record Vertical Horizon has yet recorded, by a long shot. Oh, and Rush fans, take note—three songs on the new album feature Neil Peart on drums, and one of them is a song that Peart wrote the lyrics for. Pretty cool.
