Burchfield Penney Art Center, Saturday and Sunday

“Milton Rogovin: Native American Series with the Poetry of Eric Gansworth” is in the Burchfield Penney Art Gallery’s Corridor Gallery through Jan. 3.

The exhibition features the poetry of Gansworth, a Canisius professor of English and Lowery writer in residence, and Rogovin’s photographs, from 1963 to 1993, of Native Americans on the Lower West Side and on the Cattaraugus, Tonawanda and Tuscarora reservations.

Gansworth was approached by Rogovin to collaborate, but was at first wary of doing so because of white photographers’ past misrepresentations of Indians. That vanished, as he delved deeper into the images and Rogovin’s life.

At 1 p. m. Saturday, Melanie Herzog, professor of art history at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., and Rogovin’s biographer, will lecture on his life and work.

It will be followed by a 20- minute short, “Picture Man: The Poetry of Photographer Milton Rogovin,” in which Rogovin recites poems he wrote to accompany selected photographs.

At 2 p. m. Sunday, Gansworth will present a poetry reading, “From the Western Door to the Lower West Side.”

Both events will include book signings, with Rogovin signing copies of that and another newly published book, “Milton Rogovin: The Lens & the Pen—Photography & Poetry.”

NewPhoenixTheatreonthePark, Thursday to Nov. 21

“Sweet Street,” a new work by Richard Lambert, New Phoenix Theatre’s executive director, is billed as “a musical intersection of Leonard Cohen and Milton Rogovin” that explores issues of homelessness. For information:
