John Tesh has sold some 7 million records of his own New Age/pop compositions. Seriously. He also has written a few books, of the self-help variety, and hosts a syndicated radio show dedicated to spreading his personal philosophy, to the tune of his own grandiose, melodic and occasionally overwrought instrumental music.
Tesh has had success in both the secular world and the Contemporary Christian music field. And though, like Yanni and Kenny G, he has inspired the ire of folks who claim to take music too seriously to endure what they interpret as the vapid textures and melodic flights of these instrumental giants, Tesh has managed to tap intowell, something in the psyches of his listeners.
Now, Tesh is coming to town, for a gig at 8 p. m. Saturday in Buffalo State College’s Rockwell Hall, where he will offer a blend of original compositions, popular sports themes, comedy, and some of his “intelligence for your life” self-help raps. The concert opens the 2009-2010 Great Performers Series at Rockwell Hall that includes upcoming performances by Paula Poundstone, The Rippingtons and George Winston.
