Hunter’s trio

Throughout August, guitarist Charlie Hunter presided over a residency in the Brooklyn nightclub Rose Live Music.

During that time, Hunter — famous for his incredibly dexterous jazz-blues-funk flights across the fretboard of his custom-built seven-string guitar — worked with three different drummers, among them revered jazz tub-thumper and Buffalo native Bobby Previte.

Hunter and the various drummers performed as a duo — something few guitarists could pull off. But Hunter’s ability to play roaming bass lines and melodic and chordal patterns simultaneously makes it as natural as breathing. For the final night of that Brooklyn residency, Hunter brought in a fully fleshed brass band to join in the revelry.

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall that night . . .

Hunter will bring yet another variation of his musical ensembles — this one a trio featuring trumpeter Eric Biondo and drummer Eric Kalb — to the Tralf Music Hall (622 Main St.) for a show at 8 p. m. Wednesday. The group will certainly perform material from Hunter’s most recent studio recording, the funk-based “Baboon Strength,” as well as some pieces from the album Hunter plans to lay to tape this fall.

A wing and a prayer

The eighth annual Rock for Food concert and fundraiser takes place inside the Pearl Street Grill (76 Pearl St.) beginning at 6 tonight. For the second year in a row, the Western New York Food Bank benefit — originated by Buffalo musician Scott Celani — is teaming with the National Buffalo Wing Festival to present a host of bands on two stages — one inside, and one outside — at the restaurant/club.

Scheduled to perform are the Scott Celani Band, New Clear Fusion, Dee Adams, Mo Porter, the Rob Falgiano Band, Melissa Kate, Chris Maloney and Vinny DeRosa.
