No horsing around…
Sheryl Crow is joining others in calling on the federal government to halt roundups of wild horses in the West, branding them as inhumane and unnecessary.
The Grammy Award-winning singer has asked President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to scrap a proposed roundup of 2,500 mustangs in northern Nevada.
“With one voice we are insisting that our government stop managing these beautiful and important animals to extinction,” Crow said in a statement released by the Cloud Foundation, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based horse advocacy group.
“It’s time for all of us to speak up for our wild horses and burros so we do not lose these living legends and inspiring symbols of our freedom in America,” she said.
U. S. Bureau of Land Management officials said they plan to remove 11,500 wild horses and burros from the range over each of the next three years because booming numbers of the animals are damaging the range.
Comedy for charity…
John Travolta and his family helped raise money for charities in their home state of Florida with a screening of his new comedy Friday night.
The actor, his wife, Kelly Preston, and their daughter Ella Bleu greeted hundreds of fans on the red carpet in Ocala for Disney’s “Old Dogs,” which opens Wednesday.
The family expressed its appreciation to the community in their first public appearance in their adopted Florida hometown since his son’s death. An emotional Travolta thanked the crowd for supporting the family since 16-year-old Jett Travolta died Jan. 2 at the family vacation home in the Bahamas.
The private gala raised at least $37,500 for five nonprofit agencies: The Jett Travolta Foundation, Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council, Project Hope, the Marion County Public Safety Assistance Trust and the Humane Society of Marion County.
Won’t get Rich…
A Nashville judge has dismissed assault and harassment charges against country music singer John Rich.
Rich and other witnesses testified Friday before Judge John Aaron Holt that he did not punch aspiring singer Jared Ashley at a private nightclub in March 2008.
Ashley, a former contestant on the cable TV music show “Nashville Star,” claimed Rich later threatened him in a voice mail message.
Rich is a member of the duo Big & Rich and had a solo hit earlier this year, “Shuttin’ Detroit Down.”
Caan cans marriage…
James Caan is seeking a divorce from his wife of 14 years.
Court records in Los Angeles show “The Godfather” actor filed for divorce Friday. It’s the second time that Caan has sought to divorce his wife, Linda. The first case, filed in 2005, was not pursued.
The couple were married in October 1995 and have two sons, ages 14 and 11. Caan is seeking joint custody of the boys.
Caan, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as Sonny Corleone in “The Godfather,” has starred in numerous movies and television series.
He cited irreconcilable differences for the split.
