Juniper opens

Elmwood Village residents have been anxiously watching the construction of Juniper at 810 Elmwood Ave. for many months and now it’s officially open. The restaurant is located in the spiffily redone premises that once housed Upstairs Downstairs and May Jen. It’s owned by Kate Elliott and Lindsay Malinowski; Elliott is the executive chef.

The philosophy behind Juniper is to make full use of local sources for food, and indeed on every table there’s a list of what’s new at market that week — those products will be used throughout the menu.

It’s open for dinners-only right now — 5 to 10 p. m. Tuesday through Thursday; 5 to 11 p. m. Friday and Saturday — but brunch and lunch are coming soon. Visit the site at www.juniperelmwood.com ; more info available at info@juniperelmwood.com or call 885-5239. As a gesture of neighborhood solidarity, the 22 Tuesday policy is now in effect here. Residents of the 14222 ZIP code get 20 percent off on Tuesdays.

Everything lobster

Pietros Ristorante & Martini Bar, 5841 Transit Road, East Amherst, is hosting a Lobster Bake at 5 p. m. Thursday. Whole lobster, old bay shrimp, andouille sausage, lobster mac & cheese, corn on the cob and more will be served. Cost is $75 and reservations are required; call 639-8940. For info: www.pietroristorante.com Fish, chips to go

And yet another eating place opens today at 1066 Elmwood Ave. It’s Captain Jack’s, owned by Pete Cavaretta and is basically a take-out place although there is a small patio.

The specialty here, as you’ve probably guessed, is fish and chips and other creatures from the sea. And no, they won’t be served in the traditional newspaper cone because the health department says no-no. But Cavaretta assures us that he’s located a company that will provide wrappers that look like the very same thing.

Hours are 11 a. m. to 9 p. m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a. m. to 11 p. m. Friday and Saturdays. Phone: 881-3474.
