Frank Sinatra Jr. draws ovations during impressive show

NIAGARA FALLS — Frank Sinatra Jr.—now that would be a difficult name for a singer to carry around.
Everywhere he goes, every time he opens his mouth and sings a note, he’ll be compared to his late father, one of the most popular, controversial and influential entertainers of the past century. There isn’t anything he can ever do — ever — that will make people forget the “chairman of the board.”
Those were a few of the thoughts buzzing around in my head as Sinatra Jr., now 65, performed Tuesday afternoon before a small but appreciative audience at the Seneca Niagara Casino. Another performance was scheduled for Tuesday night.
I was a big fan of his dad, who died 11 years ago at age 82. I was curious to see what kind of show the legend’s son could put on. You know what? It was pretty impressive and very enjoyable, drawing a couple of standing ovations toward the end.
The son’s voice will never have the range or dramatic power of his father’s, but he can sing. He is a highly competent, professional musician whose great love of jazz shines through on every song. He knows music. He started taking violin lessons at age 5, spent a lot of time working with the great Duke Ellington, wrote many songs and worked as a musical conductor for his father.
With his close-cropped gray hair, he bears a striking physical resemblance to his father, but his voice is really a bit more like that of a Mel Torme.
“A jazzy show,” the singer said. “That’s what this is all about.”
He also has a lot of stories about his dad, and it was interesting to hear his perspectives on his father’s music and some of the musical giants he got to know.
Backed by a very talented eight-member jazz outfit, Sinatra Jr. spent much of the show performing his father’s songs, but he didn’t stick to the best-known hits. He did 18 songs in an hour and 20 minutes.
Some of the show’s most poignant moments came on two ballads that were successes for his father, but not huge hits. For many Sinatra fans, “Angel Eyes,” the sad tale of a man who has lost everything, is an unforgettable classic. Sinatra Jr. delivered a beautiful, emotionally charged rendition. Just as moving was “Autumn Leaves,” which he performed with only his guitarist, Jim Fox, backing him. Fox’s solo was exquisite.
And there were plenty of the jaunty Sinatra hits, too — “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Luck Be A Lady” and of course, “New York, New York,” featuring a four-man horn section that somehow managed to sound like 40 horns.
The audience clearly enjoyed “Strangers in the Night,” a huge hit from the 1960s, but the singer revealed that someone he knew wasn’t a big fan of that song.
When he spent seven years as his father’s conductor, he said the elder Sinatra always gave him a look of total disgust when it was time to sing “Strangers.”
“I told him, “It sold nine million records!’” Sinatra Jr. recalled. “He said, ‘What difference does that make?’ ”
