From underground, the mighty sound of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band

Some forms of music — no matter how well they’re made — seem to be at home “underground.”
Luckily for those who make a living making this music from town to town, Buffalo is a welcome stop with plenty of places to play to passionate crowds. So welcome, in fact, that one of its latest, greatest venues literally is underground.
Located in the basement of Babeville at Franklin and Tupper — downtown but down below the radar — The Ninth Ward serves as a superb setting for these artists, and on Monday night, with a sold-out crowd, welcomed from Indiana the corn-bred country blues of The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band.
Setting the stage in a surprisingly subdued yet still stellar state was local senseis of slap-skanky psychobilly the Irving Klaws, kicking out timeless original classics to the already packed house. Like the venue, the Klaws were a great pairing with the Peytons in that their performance is propelled by a sincere dedication to their musical style.
The stage plenty warm, the husky Reverend Peyton took the stage with a resonator guitar, his soulmate, Breezy, at his side with a washboard, and his brother, Jayme, behind on a drum set that included a bucket. The three unleashed a primal, transcendent trip into the country blues of rural Indiana that was at once imposing and inviting. Those who shouted back at the reverend’s rousing crowd calls may have been coerced at first, but by the end of the show they were louder than him.
For those who were there but had a hard time discerning his thick Hoosier drawl, the reverend’s early cries that “The Creeks Are All Bad” bemoan the 21st century blues with plainspoken stabs such as “Had a good day at the fishin’ hole you filled up your sack/But if you know what’s good for you you’re gonna throw ‘em back”; while “Wal-Mart Killed the Country Store” called the source of their scorn out by name, and of course, got the band banned at the world’s top CD seller.
But plenty of folks around here know their side of the story— East Aurora would eat up that last tune — and the Ninth Ward crowd ate up every serving.
After shouting out “Your Cousin’s on Cops” — their most downloaded ditty — the reverend encouraged his fans to pick up their orange hunting cap in time for the season. Indeed, it’s smart to take precautions while in the field — but everyone’s all smiles with their guard down underground.
