Enemies present ...
SteveMartin and AlecBaldwin will co-host the Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday the two Hollywood veterans will share hosting duties at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony.
Telecast producers BillMechanic and AdamShankman said in a statement the two actors are “the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars.”
Martin has hosted twice before, in 2001 and 2003, and has appeared as a presenter several times. Baldwin is a first-timer.
Baldwin, 51, who stars on NBC’s “30 Rock,” called the Oscar gig “the opportunity of a lifetime.” He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.”Martin said that he is “happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin.”
The 82nd Academy Awards will be presented March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre.
Dickens of a film...
Jim Carrey, Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins switched on London’s Christmas lights on Tuesday and attended the world premiere of the 3-D film “A Christmas Carol.”
The actors came to the British capital to promote Robert Zemeckis’ animated movie, which features their voices.
The three stars turned on the lights at Oxford Circus and Regent Street— London’s main shopping areas—and at St. Paul’s Cathedral. After that, tenor Andrea Bocelli and the St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir led more than 14,000 people in a Christmas carol event.
The new movie was later screened at a cinema on central London’s Leicester Square.
Continuing court saga ...
California’s 2nd District Court of Appeal will hear arguments Dec. 10 on Roman Polanski’s efforts to get his sexual assault case dismissed.
Polanski last year asked a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to dismiss the three-decade-old case, in which the director pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl at the home of Jack Nicholson. But the judge refused.
Polanski fled the United States in 1978, just before he was scheduled to be sentenced. He refused to return to fight for dismissal of the charges.
Amid the court battle, Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on a warrant related to the sexual assault case. He’s now in a Zurich prison and vowing to fight extradition back to Los Angeles, where Swiss authorities say he’d face up to two years in prison.
Polanski has asked for bail three times, but Swiss authorities have rejected his requests, saying he poses a flight risk.
