Details of the seventh annual Music Is Art Festival were announced Sunday at the Allendale Theatre on Allen Street.

Robby Takac, Music Is Art founder and Goo Goo Dolls bassist, said this year’s Music Is Art festival will be held Sept. 12 at the same venue as last year— Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

The all-day festival, which is free, will feature more than 35 bands and 40 displaying artists and photographers, as wells as live art, dancers and disc jockeys. It also will include a beer and wine tent, food vendors and other nonprofit organizations. With the assortment of acts, the festival’s theme is “Monster Mash-up.”

Takac described the festival as “an opportunity for bands and artists to . . . reach a much larger audience than they might be able to otherwise.”

“I think Buffalo has a pretty rich, cultural heritage,” Takac said. “There’s a new generation of folks that need to be represented [musically].”

“People need these right now, especially in this economy,” he continued. “Music now is a distinguished, valuable and necessary task for all of us. And doing what makes people feel good is just as good if not better than doing what makes money.”

Asked why the festival announcement coincided with the Allentown Art Festival, Takac said it was intentional.

“Why? Because those punks at the Allentown Art Festival got me kicked out of there a few years ago, that’s why,” Takac said. “Honestly, I wish it could have worked out otherwise. Maybe someday soon we’ll kiss and make up. I really do hope so.”

The feud arose the first year Takac tried to introduce music into the Allentown Arts Festival lineup, in 2003. Takac envisioned it as a meshing of the arts, but the Allentown crew didn’t seem too happy about sharing the spotlight.

Mary Myszkiewicz, Allentown Village Society president, declined to discuss the issue Sunday, other than to wish Takac and his festival the best of luck.
