LEWISTON –Artpark unveiled its full summer lineup Wednesday, putting itself first in line among free outdoor concert venues in Western New York to release its list of acts.
But aside from the performers for its “Tuesday in the Park” series this year, including The Guess Who, Grand Funk Railroad and Peter Frampton, the picturesque music and arts venue on the lower Niagara River is offering more events that span a variety of tastes.
The head of the nonprofit organization that puts on the entertainment said his highlight of the season, Artpark’s 35th anniversary, is the Broadway show built “from the ground up.”
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be performed 11 times in 11 days in August, Artpark & Co. Executive Director George Osborne announced at a morning news conference.
The show is not a national touring act, but includes a cast assembled by Artpark specifically for shows here, Osborne said. Performances will run Aug. 13 through 16, and Aug. 20 through 23.
In addition to Broadway, Artpark will host the Buffalo-based dance company LehrerDance for a July 10 performance.
Jon Lehrer, a Queens native who founded the national touring company, choreographs all the dances, which he said are set to a variety of music, from Paul Simon to Vivaldi.
“We really span the spectrum of music, as well as style of dance,” Lehrer said.
Some other highlights from the season:
The summer begins May 28 with a stage performance of “Town Mouse, Country Mouse.”
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will be back for its sixth-straight season with nine concerts starting July 11. Two shows, on July 25 and 26, will be part of Niagara Wine Trail Festival weekend.
Osborne said the BPO’s July 31 show, dubbed “Video Games Live,” will include some songs from video games performed by the symphony, as well as live video of games projected onto giant video screens.
He called the concert “an excellent chance to introduce young people to symphony.”
Artpark’s Big Band Series has two dates: On June 22, the Toronto All-Star Big Band, which features musicians between the ages of 16 and 21 from across Ontario; and on
July 20, with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Artpark’s two free outdoor concert series, “Tuesday in the Park” and “Wednesday on the Gorge,” were likely the two most anticipated announcements.
The Wednesday series comes with a binational theme, as the artists are from across Canada and the United States.
The Guess Who will be making their first appearance at Artpark, and America will be back after drawing between 8,000 and 10,000 to their show here last year.
Last season, Artpark drew more than 230,000 visitors to its scheduled events. Artpark & Co., which saw its state funding cut to $200,000 from $450,000, has received increased support from sponsors, officials said.
