Actress Mitzi Gaynor says filming “South Pacific” on the Hawaiian island of Kauai some 50 years ago “was a hoot.”
The 78-year-old returned to the island this week for the first time since production wrapped on the hit 1958 musical. Gaynor’s portrayal as Ensign Nellie Forbush earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for best actress in a musical.
“Fifty years ago, it was Eden. It really was. It was a paradise,” Gaynor said of Kauai. “And the people were so wonderful and so kind to us.”
Gaynor recalled shooting the beach scene where she sings “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,” while actually washing her hair. Despite three months of rehearsals on the mainland, she found she had to stop because the shampoo stung her eyes.
The resulting round-trip car ride to Lihue to buy baby shampoo prompted a four-hour filming delay. But the milder shampoo “saved the day,” Gaynor said.
“We did it all in one day,” she said.

TLC has suspended production of its show, “Kate Plus 8,” after Jon Gosselin’s attorney sent the network a letter banning camera crews and producers from the home he co-owns with Kate.
“Effective immediately, no production crews are to enter Jon’s family home for any reason,” a letter from his attorney says, according to The Insider. “In the event that anyone enters the marital property, Jon Gosselin will notify the local authorities
to effectuate police action against any trespassers.” TLC network has shut down filming of the children “pending further conversations” between both Gosselins, who are parents of young twins and sextuplets. Filming not directly involving the kids continues, TLC said Thursday.
“It appears that Jon’s priority is Jon and his interests,” Kate Gosselin said in a statement on Thursday. “My priority remains our children and their well being.”
The Gosselins filed for divorce in June, after weeks of reports of marital discord.
In her statement, Kate Gosselin said, “I’m saddened and confused by Jon’s public media statements. Jon has never expressed any concerns to me about our children being involved in the show and, in fact, is on the record as saying he believes the show benefits our children and was taping on Friday with the kids.”

A spokesman for Dennis Hop-per says the 73-year-old actor is out of the hospital and “feeling much better” after falling ill on Wednesday.
In a statement, Sam Maydew, Hopper’s manager, said that the “Easy Rider” star went to a Manhattan hospital after showing severe flu-like symptoms.
On a publicity trip to New York, the Los Angeles-based Hopper had been forced to cancel a number of interviews and TV appearances on Wednesday, including an interview on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” which replaced him with Jack McBrayer of “30 Rock.”
Hopper’s current project is “Crash,” a TV version of the Oscarwinning 2004 film. He plays maniacal music producer Ben Cendars on the drama, which airs on the Starz network.
