They are the gifts that keep on giving. DVD box sets provide hours, even days of entertainment, thanks to multiple discs crammed with bonus material, interactive features and extended movies, as well as fun collectibles and gadgets.
Though these gift sets have been fairly pricey in recent years, the home video industry seems to have caught onto the fact that not everyone can afford a $200 box set. Though some of the massive TV on DVD collections still hover in that price range, many others are half that or even less.
The best buy of the season: Look for the label “ultimate collector’s editions” (or “UCE”). These are cool gifts packed with extras and collectibles. Best of all, they have a budget-friendly price and offer a wide range of titles to please everyone on your gift list –from teens (“I Am Legend”) to hubby (“JFK”) and grandparents (“How the West Was Won,” “The Rat Pack”).
A prime example is the gorgeous “Casablanca: Ultimate Collector’s Edition” available Tuesday from Warner Bros. From the intricate laser-cut Moroccan design that slips over the sturdy blue box encasing the set, this is a beauty both in quality and price ($59.98 standard DVD or $64.99 Blu-ray).
The three-disc DVD has hours of bonus features and includes the bonus disc, “Jack L. Warner: The Last Mogul.” Also included are a lovely hardcover book; 10 oversized color postcards; copies of Warner Bros. correspondence; and a copy of the passport for the character of Victor Laszlo. Even more fun: a “Casablanca” passport cover and luggage tag to use.
Here are other ideas for all budgets and interests. All sets are available now unless noted.
“Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection” (eight discs, $119.98, MGM). The films of Alfred Hitchcock have been packaged and repackaged so many times, it’s getting more difficult to know if a new set is worth buying. This one is. Finally, we have a set with “Rebecca,” the only film for which Hitch won an Oscar. Also included: “The Paradine Case,” “Spellbound,” “Notorious,” “Sabotage,” “Lifeboat,” “Young and Innocent,” and the 1927 silent film “The Lodger,” considered to be the first true Hitchcockian film.
Hours of bonus features include interviews with noted filmmakers and Hitchcock scholars Peter Bogdanovich and Francois Truffaut, commentaries and featurettes. Packaged inside a clear acrylic box is a large, spiral-bound book that holds the DVDs for the eight films, as well as trivia and photos.
“Abbott and Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection” (15 discs, $119.98, Universal). Every movie the duo made at Universal Studios –28 in all –are in this nifty box set, including those witty films the boys made with such Universal monsters as Frankenstein and the Mummy. And yes, it has the comic master bit “Who’s on First.” A nice bonus: The 15 discs are separated into five booklike cases, making it easy to take a few movies to a friend’s house.
A disc of bonus features has the fun and informative “Abbott and Costello Meet Jerry Seinfeld,” a 1994 documentary in which the modern-day comedian tells their story with the help of vintage clips and audio. (“I grew up on these two guys,” Seinfeld says.)
“Columbia Best Pictures Collection” (14 discs, $135.95, Sony). Eleven movies boasting the names of Frank Capra, Marlon Brando and Meryl Streep are here along with featurettes, commentaries and documentaries. The Oscar-winning films are “It Happened One Night,” “You Can’t Take It With You,” “All the King’s Men,” “From Here to Eternity,” “On the Waterfront,” “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “A Man for All Seasons,” “Oliver!,” “Kramer vs. Kramer” and “Gandhi.”
“Hollywood Musicals Collection” (61 discs, $499.98, MGM). This may very well be the biggest set offered this holiday season. The 50 musicals run the gamut of taste from “Beach Blanket Bingo” to “Kid Galahad,” “All That Jazz” and two-disc anniversary editions of “Oklahoma!,” “The Sound of Music,” “South Pacific” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” A postcard reproduction of the original theatrical posters are included for each movie.
“The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection” (eight discs, $89.95, Genius Products/RHI). Here are all 80 classic short films (1929 to 1938) starring the Our Gang kids –Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat and others. Three Hal Roach Our Gang silent shorts, featurettes and commentaries are included, as well as a collectible photo booklet with trivia, lobby cards and photos.
“Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition” (four discs, $69.99, Shout! Factory). They make bad movies great. Laugh it up with Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson and robot pals Tom Servo, Crow T. “300 Limited Collector’s Edition” (three discs, $49.92, Warner). This three-disc set includes a bonus disc with the new documentary “To the Hot Gates: A Legend Retold –The 300 Legend Filtered Through History, Graphic Novel and Film” and a digital copy of the film. A 52-page hardcover art book slides out of a hard shell case. Six collectible photo cards with movie quotes and a Lucite display with a motion film image are also included.
Two acclaimed (and now concluded) HBO series are being released Tuesday in their entirety, “Deadwood: The Complete Series” (19 discs, $179.97), and “The Wire: The Complete Series” (23 discs, $249.99). “Deadwood” has a bonus disc of new material including a historical featurette and talk with creator David Milch on the series conclusion. “The Wire” also has three prequels and a gag reel.
“The Complete Monty Python’s Flying Circus Collector’s Edition” (21 discs, $159.99, A&E). When they say complete, they mean it: Every episode of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and “Monty Python Live!” are here –and that’s not all. “Monty Python’s Personal Best” is a collection of six mini best-of documentaries from the “Flying Circus.” The 21 discs are packaged in a colorful container that looks like a large recipe box. Bonus features include the documentaries “Before Flying Circus” and “Monty Python Conquers America” (both of which have reportedly never been released “on this side of the Atlantic”), deleted scenes, a Pythonism glossary, a retrospective, Gillianimations Art Gallery and much more.
“Charmed: The Complete Series (Limited Deluxe Edition)” (49 discs, $317.99, Paramount). It’s pricey to be sure, but you get 173 episodes plus an oversized case that looks like the “Book of Shadows” from the show. Too costly? The standard edition is about $271.
“The Incredible Hulk: The Complete Series” (20 discs, $149.98, Universal). Bill Bixby stars as the mild-mannered scientist who turns green with anger and becomes the Hulk (played by Lou Ferrigno). This giant set has 82 episodes, plus six hours of bonus features.
“Knight Rider: The Complete Series” (24 discs, $119.98, Universal). The Hoff and K. I. T. T. –need we say more? All four seasons of the original “Knight Rider” plus the 2000 television movie are packaged in a black box that lights up and plays a snippet of the show theme at the push of a button. Extras include a documentary, interviews, commentaries, still gallery and K. I. T. T. blueprints.
“Little House on the Prairie: The Complete Television Series” (60 discs, $279.98, Lionsgate). Cleverly packaged inside a wagon-shaped album are all nine seasons of this much-loved family television series, plus the three movies based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. “Wagon Train: The Complete Color Season” (16 discs, $119.98, Timeless Media Group, via online retailers).
