I’ve been a proud resident of Western New York for more than 50 years. I live in Alden, work in Buffalo, watch the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park, ride my bike along the Erie Canal in Tonawanda and enjoy dining at the Eagle House in Williamsville.

I also support Kevin Gaughan’s government downsizing efforts, mainly because of his approach. He believes in letting the people decide, and he’s inclusive in airing all perspectives. I attended Gaughan’s speech at Williamsville South High School, so I can attest that he practices what he preaches. Gaughan engaged the audience in a two-hour discussion, giving everyone in the room a chance to have his say, assail Gaughan’s ideas and at times attack him. It was an exhaustive, exhilarating experience for everyone there.

So when I read in The News that some Williamsville village residents pressured their local restaurant to stop Gaughan from speaking there, you can understand how dismayed I felt. As anyone who has visited the Eagle House knows, its wall are adorned with documents from our country’s colonial age, celebrating the principles of American democracy: free speech, freedom of assembly and the people’s right to change government.

Our brave military defends these democratic tenants around the world. Whenever any of us betrays these principles, by trying to silence the voice of a fellow citizen, we are all diminished.
