New York State is at a crossroads. The Legislature is presented with the opportunity to pass a bill that would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, granting them access to the same rights already afforded to straight couples. This comes at a time when national and statewide polls have shown an enormous increase in public support for marriage equality. More New Yorkers than ever recognize that denying our gay and lesbian family members, friends, coworkers and neighbors the right to marry is simply not fair.

Marriage equality is about fairness. It is about ending discrimination. It is about the freedom to marry the person you love and the legal rights that go along with it.

Throughout my career in public service, I have worked for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender New Yorkers. It is an issue that is close to me personally, but beyond that it is a public issue that has the power to change society’s perception. I believe that as an elected official, I have an obligation to help the people in my district who need it the most. It is time for us as representatives to acknowledge the will of the people both in New York and beyond and pass marriage equality legislation.

Some opponents argue that civil unions are a compromise solution that would allow gay and lesbian couples some limited rights. Yet a recent evaluation of the civil union system instituted in neighboring New Jersey showed that the two are not equivalent in practice. Couples joined in civil union faced bureaucratic hurdles that married couples did not. The two institutions were in effect separate, but not equal. Civil unions are not the answer. There is just no substitute for marriage.

To be clear, this legislation expands the legal definition of marriages recognized by the state. No religious institution would be forced to perform marriage for gay or lesbian couples, nor would any religion be compelled to recognize their marriages.

As majority whip, I will do all that I can to ensure that true marriage equality passes for a fourth time in the State Assembly. But once again, the State Senate will be the battleground for this vote. My colleagues in the State Senate must understand that this discrimination against lesbian and gay couples and their families cannot continue any longer. They must understand that a “yes” vote for marriage equality is a “yes” for justice, equality and fairness.

New York State was once a progressive leader in civil rights. It is time for our State Legislature to stand up and make our state a leader once again. We must end this injustice that has gone on for too long by making marriage equality law.

Sam Hoyt, D-Buffalo, represents the 144th Assembly District.

Chris, you've been told that God is indeed merciful and forgiving, having sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners. All who trust in Him as Lord and Saviour, and accept His ready forgiveness, are guaranteed eternal life.(John 3:16; Romans 10:9) He then asks us to walk in newness of life(2 Corinthians 5:17).

However, the gospel is not complete without warning those who refuse to believe about the eternal horrors of hell. It is called, throughout the Scriptures, a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth, everlasting torment, and agony.

The choice is yours, Chris; we'll continue praying for you, that the Lord opens your eyes to the truth.

"Tha law of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eye."(Psalm 19:8)

I cannot in good conscience worship any god as insecure and barbaric as the one described in your Bible.

"My inner life is mine, and I would not be so cowardly as to relinquish it under threat."

"Because of the terror of the Lord we persuade men..."

You can accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour now by choice and love... or face Him as your Judge in the final day.

I should clarify statement (1), below: My intent is not to equate Christians and Nazis. My point is that those Christians who would use Hitler as a reason to bash science or secularism (as does Mr. Marshall) would do well to consider Hitler's godly motives and recognize that both Nazis and Christians have defined the same "out-groups" - gays and Jews - and see fire as the appropriate punishment for both.

Sorry Mr. Marshall, but I do not sell my soul or abandon my conscience out of fear, as your scriptures would require. My inner life is mine, and I would not be so cowardly as to relinquish it under threat. And make no mistake, Christianity dictates conversion on the pain of infinite torture. (As do you, in light of your attempts to convert others by appealing not to their highest motives, but to their basest fears concerning death and the unknown.) Perhaps this is one reason why Christianity (and other dogmatic belief systems) continues to fall out of favor in the developed world. The last, most absolute totalitarianism is religious belief, and it has lost power and influence in direct proportion to increases in human liberty, knowledge, and prosperity.

I know it's not possible to make headway against the things of God, Chris.

Instead, let the Word of God make headway with you. You only stand to benefit, and greatly so, from it. Let it work its power within you and make you "wise unto salvation."

(2) Christians reject a key element of justice - that the punishment should fit the crime. According to Christian doctrine, the punishment is the same no matter the severity of the crime. So whether you murder millions, cheat on your wife, or simply deny supernatural claims about Christ, you deserve infinite and unending torture. (Whether or not eternal torture is anything other than barbaric is a debate for another time.)

(3) Non-Christians should behave in accordance with Christian doctrine not because those rules consider the health, safety, and welfare of other human beings, but because an authority beyond our conscious comprehension has dictated that it should be so. Indeed, all morality is based on the authoritarian promise of either punishment or reward, not the actual effect the crime has on any other thing or person. (This is also known as "Obedience and Punishment Orientation," the first of Kohlberg's six stages of morality, which describes the moral reasoning of young children.)

(4) Christians believe that they argue from a pure, unchanging position. This is obviously false given the ways in which Christian doctrine has changed to remain relevant as humanity gained knowledge of the natural world over the centuries. Many of today's Christians, for example, tend not to argue for the exclusion of women from the public and professional worlds or for strict separation of the races, even though their ancestors weilded numerous Bible passages in support of these (thankfully archaic and socially rejected) perspectives.

CHRIS WILLETT, BUFFALO, NY on Tue May 31, 2011 at 07:30 PM

Mike, it's not possible to make headway. I have observed that those who believe unquestioningly in something for which there is scant evidence - be they religious folk or conspiracy theorists - are unlikely or unable to respond to rational arguments with anything other than continued repetition of the same beliefs and a reflexive denial of the legitimacy of any other point of view. Indeed, the more such beliefs are threatened by inconvenient questions, the more inflexible the believer becomes. Emotional reasoning takes over.

These debates are useful, however, in that they often reveal the great strains that must be made in order to make the belief system appear consistent and reasonable. For example, Biblical inconsistencies are explained away through claims of mistranslations or misunderstandings. The violent narcissism of the Old Testament god is swept under the rug or justified by the behaviors of the flawed humans (that the so-called perfect god created). Laughable logic is employed in the claim that the Bible is true because it says it's true. It goes on and on . . .

The arguments of the past few months have revealed some interesting things about Christianity that I had not previously considered:

(1) Christians invoke the memory of Hitler at their own peril. In accordance with their interpretation of "Natural Law," the Nazis believed that inferiors, such as Jews and gays, should burn. In accordance with their interpretation of "God's Law," Christians believe that inferiors, such as Jews and gays, should burn. The only difference seems to be that the Nazis weren't willing to wait until the "undesirables" died before stoking the fires of Hell.

CHRIS WILLETT, BUFFALO, NY on Tue May 31, 2011 at 07:28 PM

Of course... I know that you, Mike, have been duped into believing these things...

1: that what you see in this universe is all there was, all there is, and all there ever will be;

2: that there is benefit from living in a lifestyle that is clearly unnatural;

3: and that there is no supreme Authority to whom all must give account.

Hebrews 10:31 and 12:31 tell us differently, however. After this life is over, the judgment comes.

Romans 10:9, however, among others, points a way out via repentance and faith.

Mark 16:16, however, among others, points out that those who "reject so great salvation(Hebrews 2:3)" while they yet have a chance in this lifetime are condemned forever. Don't let this opportunity be suddenly shut off from you by death or the Rapture(Hebrews 3:15).

Amen.

LLOYD MARSHALL, LOCKPORT, NY on Tue May 31, 2011 at 06:27 AM

"Did you ever stop to consider *who* defines what is normal and abnormal, acceptable or not acceptable?"

Yes, Chris... we already KNOW Who has made that determination... God Himself! 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Deuteronomy 30:19 are but two examples of God promising blessing to those who turn from wickedness and do things His way. He alone holds our lives... our breath... in His hands. How dare any of us claim to be better or wiser than He? Don't be like Belshazzar(Daniel, Chapter 5), who only continued to live in wickedness as opposed to his (grand-?)father Nebuchadnezzar(Daniel 4), who realized that God indeed reigns.

LLOYD MARSHALL, LOCKPORT, NY on Tue May 31, 2011 at 06:14 AM

Lloyd this 'go around' with you is exhausting. Face it, you've been duped. Every shred of argument you have is derived from one book. It is paralyzingly nonsensical to hinge your entire life on a 2000 year old scribblings that could've actually been the times best selling fantasy novel. As far as Hitler, he is on your side of the fence not mine. He was a fanatic with irrational views so he squarely falls in your camp, I'm mean really let's face it Lloyd, you would fire up the ovens if they were cooking homosexuals. Your bible contains more inconsistencies, lies and all out tall tales then a modern day political speech. "Mike is the most amazing guy in WNY and you will burn in a lake of fire unless you believe" 5-30-11 news blog.... Well gee Lloyd, should everyone now read that last sentence as the word of god and believe it as true because they just read it? Am I not an apostle? What makes them better then me? In two thousand years how many revisions will your good book have had? Get a grip...even kids get over their belief in Santa. It's you and others like you, who stifle progress and peace.
