Joseph A. Maiorana Sr., former head of county Youth Board

Joseph A. Maiorana Sr. of Williamsville, who served as executive director of the Erie County Youth Board in the 1970s and later as assistant superintendent of programs at Alden Correctional Facility, died Sunday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 71.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. He served in the Army as a legal clerk from 1956 to 1957. He earned his bachelor’s degree in social work from Canisius College and his master’s degree in social work from the University of Buffalo.

From 1966 to 1970, Mr. Maiorana worked as an assistant professor at UB in the School of Social Welfare. In 1970, he was appointed by County Executive B. John Tutuska to head the county Youth Bureau. In 1986, he began work at Alden Correctional Facility, from which he retired as the assistant superintendent of programs in 1993.

He was a member of the Social Workers Club of Buffalo, the Monsignor Kirby Guild of Catholic Social Workers and a past chairman of the board and president of the Kenmore- Town of Tonawanda Jaycees, among many other organizations.

Among his many awards, Mr. Maiorana received the Distinguished Service Award from the U. S. Jaycees in 1970 and the Outstanding Service Award from the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus in 1978.

He is survived by three daughters, Julie Shaver, Jill and Jacqueline; a son, Joseph Jr.; and two sisters, Dolores Scibetta and Carol Fest.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a. m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5337 Genesee St., Bowmansville.
