As we pause this Memorial Day to remember the great men and women who died in service to our country, we realize any efforts to thank our troops and veterans will always fall short.

But that doesn’t keep us from trying.

As a small token of appreciation, here is how several area businesses have chosen to salute veterans.

Broadway Driving Range & Miniature Golf. Owned by Vietnam veteran Tom Strauss and his wife, Sue, veterans and active duty military with proper military identification can get a free round of miniature golf or $2 off a bucket of range balls today from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 683-2403 or visit 4367 Broadway in Depew.

Buster Jacobi’s. This restaurant is owned by three combat veterans. It offers free spaghetti meals to veterans on Sept. 11 and Pearl Harbor Day, the day before Veteran’s Day, the Fourth of July and Memorial Day (sorry – the free meal was Sunday. They’re closed today). But it offers vets a 10 percent discount with proper ID every day. Call 649-6100 or visit 5842 Camp Road in Hamburg.

The Grapevine Restaurant. Vets and active duty military can choose a free meal from a specific menu today. Military families get a 10 percent discount on their bill all week. Call 691-7799 or visit 2545 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst.

Caputi’s Sheridan Pub. Veterans eat free at a lunch buffet served the second Thursday of every month from noon to 2 p.m. Call 836-9758 or visit 2351 Sheridan Drive in the City of Tonawanda.

Thank a Vet. Honorably discharged veterans in Erie and Niagara counties with proper military identification can get the Thank a Vet discount card, which is accepted at hundreds of businesses throughout Western New York.

It nets veterans everything from free meals and chiropractic visits to big discounts on jewelry and oil changes.
