Goodyear plant to get more work
Goodyear Dunlop North America Tires in the Town of Tonawanda will add to its workload after a sister plant in South Carolina closes at the end of the year.
Goodyear says it plans to shift some of the work now handled by a plant in Spartanburg, S. C., to the Sheridan Drive site.
Specifics related to the production shift, such as whether any jobs will be added locally, are still being finalized, said Diane Zwirecki, a spokeswoman for the Tonawanda plant, which has more than 860 hourly workers.
The Spartanburg plant, which has 90 employees, makes retread materials for commercial truck and aircraft tires. The Tonawanda site makes commercial truck tires but not aircraft tires.
The retread materials work coming from South Carolina will be handled by a component preparation area inside the Tonawanda plant, Zwirecki said.
Mark Kurkowski, president of United Steelworkers Local 135 at the plant, could not be reached to comment.
In September, hourly workers approved a contract that ensures six Goodyear plants, including Tonawanda’s, will remain open for the next four years. The deal also calls for minimum staffing levels and new investment in the plants.
