REALITY TELEVISION

‘Extreme Makeover’ to build home for yet-to-be-named local family

NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Story tools:

One Buffalo family is getting a brand-new, environmentally friendly home — at no cost — thanks to a local builder and ABCTV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

The reality TV series is coming to Buffalo next month for the first time and has selected David Homes to construct a house in the city for one deserving family.

David Homes will work with a legion of volunteers to finish the energy-efficient home in just one week, David Stapleton, the builder’s president, said Friday.

“It’s going to be a team effort,” Stapleton said.

“Home Edition” each week selects a family that is struggling for financial or other reasons as the recipient of a new or significantly refurbished residence.

Ty Pennington, the design team leader, and other celebrity designers on the show work to make sure some of the finished home’s features match the interests of family members.

This would be the first stop by “Home Edition” in the Buffalo area, though the show did build a home for a family in Geneva, in the Finger Lakes, last year.

An ABC spokesman would not confirm the show’s appearance in Buffalo.

But Stapleton announced Friday that David Homes will design and construct the home for a family that has yet to be selected from a list of nominations.

“We’re doing everything,” he said.

Stapleton said he could not provide details about the house’s design, though he said it would meet “green” certification standards.

The identity of the family will be announced, and construction will begin on Nov. 7, with a Nov. 14 deadline for its completion, he said.

David Homes is donating its employees’ labor as well as some building materials and other resources.

The builder and Western New York AmeriCorps will coordinate the subcontractors and other small businesses, skilled laborers and members of the public who are expected to volunteer their services for the construction project.
