Residents’ return to homes is delayed
Few extra days needed to clean up crash site
Residents evacuated from the site of the Clarence plane crash will not be allowed back into their homes until Tuesday.
Town officials postponed their return, originally scheduled for today, because of weather-related delays in cleaning up the site where Continental Flight 3407 crashed last week.
“We’re back on track,” David Bissonette, the town’s disaster coordinator, said Saturday. “We’ve been hampered, frankly, by a lot of weather.”
The biggest obstacle has been frost, which has caused problems, and delays, in removing soil from the site.
A tour of the site, located on Long Street in Clarence Center, found construction equipment including a bulldozer, with several workers putting the finishing touches on the cleanup.
Clarence Supervisor Scott A. Bylewski said the 12 evacuated families would be given permission to return Tuesday, although not all of them are expected to return at that time.
“We want them all to be able to return about the same time,” Bylewski said, “but there are families who have said they’re not ready yet.”
On Saturday, families of some of the residents who were evacuated visited the site.
