Marilla wants rezoning modified
The Marilla Town Board met in a work session Tuesday to discuss a request to rezone a Clinton Street site to senior housing.
The developer, Greg Willey, had received a recommendation from the Planning Board to rezone 32 acres from agricultural to senior housing.
However, the Town Board suggested rezoning only 10 acres of the land — the minimum size to accommodate 50 units of housing for senior citizens. If the rezoned parcel is not developed in two years, the zoning reverts to agriculture.
Before a decision is made, the board wants Willey to provide a project design and how much land will be needed for a septic system. The complex — featuring townhouses, condominiums and apartments — would be built in multiple phases. Supervisor George Gertz noted a public hearing will be likely.
When the board meets in its next work session Nov. 17, storage pods will be discussed. Gertz said Town Attorney Nate Neill has drafted a resolution on temporary storage units.
Also, Gertz said, rules and regulations for Maplewood Cemetery will be adopted at the December board meeting. Maplewood — one of three cemeteries in Marilla — has been turned over to the town by the the town’s Cemetery Association, which abandoned the burial site for lack of funds.
Gertz added that Town Clerk Dawn Pearce has agreed to conduct the business of the cemetery at no cost to the town and that Highway Superintendent Ron Unverdorben has built a trailer and dump box and purchased a vacuum to get rid of the leaves there.
“It is now spotless,” said Gertz, “and the neighbors are very happy.”
