Building code redrafting puts subdivision approvals on hold

SOUTHTOWNS CORRESPONDENT

Story tools:

No new subdivisions will be approved in Elma while the Town Board crafts a new building code.

The board took the unanimous action following a public hearing this week. Supervisor Michael Nolan said that although the moratorium could last up to a year, he expects to have a new code in place much sooner.

The board will appoint a committee composed of officials from town, planning, conservation and zoning boards, plus other residents and Nolan. The appointments will be considered at the next Town Board meeting.

When a new code is ready, a public hearing will be held before the board votes on it.

In other matters:

• The board approved adding roof repairs for Pond Brook Sewer Plant to the agenda and then approved Building Inspector Joseph Colern’s request to seek bids for the repairs that will be financed by those residents serviced by the plant.

• The town will activate the reverse 911 code red to notify residents that the town Transfer Station on Creek Road will be closed for two consecutive days on June 17 and 18 to allow for repairs and paving. The cost will be $60,000 and will come from the town’s fund balance as it was not provided for in the 2009 budget.

• The board awarded a bid to Carolina Home Improvement for $17,500 to replace the library roof.

• The board issued a business use permit to MH Tech Services, 2363 Bowen Road, to operate a computer repair store at the Elma Plaza owned by Martin DiPietro.
