Water District 5 is given federal approval

SOUTHTOWNS CORRESPONDENT

Story tools:

Water District 5 has received federal approval, Marilla Supervisor George Gertz announced during a workshop meeting of the Town Board on Tuesday night.

The new district will serve 68 households that will be assessed annual payments of $811 for 38 years, plus an annual water bill of $125 through the Erie County Water Authority. The project has been in the planning for several years. Residents are coping with failing wells and poor water quality.

Gertz said town engineers Nussbaumer and Clark will have to design engineering specifications before the project is put out to bid. Work is expected to be completed by next year.

Another uncertainty is whether Alden — where residents abutting the district rejected joining the district last week — will come up with $155,000 for a 12-inch pipeline, in the event residents change their minds and decide to join the district in the future.

Alden would require a 12- inch pipeline for sufficient water pressure.

“We have also applied for a stimulus money,” Gertz added. “Our project is shovel ready, so we shall see.

Gertz also noted he has received several phone calls from Alden residents asking about possible connections.

In other matters:

• Representatives of Catholic Radio Station 101.7 FM have huddled with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Marilla officials about a proposed 400-foot broadcasting tower at the town landfill on Eastwood Road.

Members of the Marilla Town Board discussed the proposal during a work session Tuesday night, when officials said the developer will have to provide more information to receive DEC approval. Also, they said, the Town Board must give final approval to proceed with a variance that is required because town code restricts tower heights to 250 feet.

• A log jammed into a drainpipe resulted in basement flooding at the Marilla Library recently. Councilwoman Barbara Spanitz said the water came from a natural spring. Fortunately, she said, the library was occupied at the time and headed off the loss of books and computer.

• Gertz announced the town has received a $5,000 grant for the new Town Hall elevator.
