Boys and Girls Club gets approval to move to former Kingdom Hall site
The Boys and Girls Club of Holland received the go-ahead from the Town Board on Wednesday to move into its new home and plan for an expansion.
The organization purchased the old Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Vermont Street as its new headquarters and also plans to put up an addition.
The club is currently located on Route 16 in an old church. Critics have said it is cramped and unsafe, especially for children, because the entrance to the facility is just feet from the major thoroughfare.
Earlier this month, the Planning Board asked officials from the Boys and Girls Club to make several changes to their plans before appearing before the Town Board.
Those changes, which the Boys and Girls Club agreed to, include expansion of the parking lot, using a certain type of driveway material if blacktop is not used and a review by the architect of the planned expansion to reconsider snow buildup on the roof. Supervisor Michael Kasprzyk told officials from the club that the community is looking forward to the organization occupying its new home.
“We have received lots of calls — all of them positive,” Kasprzyk said. “People are happy you’re moving off of Route 16 and getting a facility that meets your needs.”
A move-in date has yet to be set. About $500,000 needs to be raised for the project and with a capital fund campaign yet to begin, the supervisor said it is unlikely the Boys and Girls Club will move in this year.
In other matters, the board:
• Learned that one contested assessment, thought to be resolved, may end up in court. Lawyers for the owner of a trailer park, valued at about $1 million, had initially come to terms with the town, but the landowner rejected the agreement.
The supervisor said the $400,000 discrepancy dates back to 2007.
• Scheduled two public hearings for March 11. Veterans exceptions will be discussed at 8 p. m. and wind farms at 8:30.
