Wales board tells speakers not to exceed five minutes
When it comes to speakers droning on and on at public hearings, the Wales Town Board has had enough.
The board passed a resolution at its Tuesday night meeting to limit all speakers to five minutes. Anyone planning to speak at a hearing is asked to prepare their remarks so they can speak within the allotted time.
Supervisor Rickey Venditti noted the last hearing — regarding the Kenneglenn Nature Preserve off Strykersville Road – ran a few hours, and many of the remarks were not relevant to the issue of allowing an office for up to four staff members there.
“We need to curtail the activity of not keeping to the subject,” Venditti said.
The board of directors of the Land Conservancy wants to relocate its offices to the Kenneglenn site to provide better supervision. Venditti suggested the board members make a list of restrictions to be a part of any business-use permit the board may approve. It will be discussed at the next work session.
Restrictions for a special-use permit for Camp Aloha also will be on the work session agenda.
Venditti, in a cost-cutting move, said he would not attend next week’s meeting of the Association of Towns in New York City.
“We can save the taxpayers $2,000 due to economic hard times,” he said.
In other business:
• Town Clerk Sharon Marfurt asked those who regularly contribute to the town’s newsletter to submit their copy to her within the next few weeks. The board approved a maximum publishing and mailing cost of $750 for the newsletter.
• The board approved a resolution to allow volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to get health coverage at their own cost through the town’s carrier, the East Aurora Chamber of Commerce. Letters to the two fire companies that cover the town — the South Wales and Wales Center fire companies — are ready to go. They can contact the town clerk for paperwork and eligibility.
• The board approved a new five-year contract for shared parking with South Wales Presbyterian Church, which allows the town to use it for its courthouse next door. “We’ve been doing it for years, and it has worked well,” Venditti said.
• The audit of town records of the supervisor, bookkeeper, town clerk, court clerk and justices were in good shape, Venditti reported. Findings are on file with the town clerk.
• The board approved a contract with Inter Smart, a Grand Island insulation company, to blow insulation into the wall between the highway garage and the new Town Hall addition at a cost of $691.21.
• The board approved the use of the town park ball diamonds on Mondays and Wednesdays from April to August for the Wales Center Hotel women’s softball team.
• Named board member liaisons were Gerald Klinck, to the Zoning Board; Michael Simon, to the Planning Board; and Donald Butcher, to the Conservation Board.
• A new time clock was approved for the Highway Department.
