Marilla hearing set on closing tax loophole
The Marilla Town Board will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p. m. Feb. 12 on a measure that would close the state’s condominium tax loophole, which allows patio homes and other upscale residences in town to qualify for tax breaks.
The board approved advertising the proposed law — named the “Marilla converted condominium taxation assessment exclusion law.” The hearing will be held before the annual organizational meeting.
In other matters at last week’s board meeting:
• Residents gave Supervisor George Gertz a standing ovation. Gertz, a volunteer firefighter, was injured battling an Eldridge Road house fire Dec. 17. He suffered severe burns to his head and hands and underwent skin grafts. Deputy Supervisor Warren Handley ran the meeting.
• The board authorized the town clerk to hire a part-time clerk, Dawn Stover.
• The board extended the hours for shooting by Allied Sportsmen of WNY on Clinton Street.
• The board approved “conduct of business” rules, which require courtesy and civility of all participants attending Town Board meetings. The rules will be displayed in the board room.
• Code Enforcement Officer John Fronczek released a 2008 report that showed the town issued 97 permits, down by nine; collected $13,435 in fees, down $4,736, on estimated construction valued at $3,884,771, down $740,317.
Total inspections, he added, increased by 17 to 150 for the year, and complaints nearly doubled, to 21. Also, two special-use permits were issued, seven applications were made to the Zoning Board, and five appearance tickets were issued.
