Eden’s late bus run reinstated
The Eden Central School District is reinstating the late bus run that it had eliminated last month but will continue to monitor the situation over the next few months.
The 5 p. m. bus, sometimes called the sports bus, was eliminated by the district administration because of rising fuel costs. After parents and students complained to the School Board last month about the change, Superintendent Ronald
K. Buggs said he would review the issue and report his findings this month.
Buggs told the School Board Wednesday night that two buses (of four, previously) will be reinstated beginning today but noted that the district would continue to monitor fuel costs over the next few months. Additionally, the number of students who use the late bus will be monitored, and a survey will be sent home to parents.
Based on those findings, a determination will be made this winter on how many late buses are needed, he said.
In other business, the board took the unusual step Wednesday of voting to respond to a flier that was distributed in some residents’ Pennysaver boxes Wednesday.
School Board member Deborah Gardner said the anonymous flier, which contained a list of grievances against the district — ranging from taxes to demands to cut a principal, among other charges — was baseless and called on whoever was behind it to come forward.
“This board and this school district have put up with enough,” said Gardner, adding that the district has to spend time and money defending against these “false statements.”
“My gloves are off,” she said. “Just have the courage and decency to show yourself or keep your mouths and your pens shut.”
A number of residents agreed, asking residents in the community to “put the students first.”
The board voted to respond to the charges in the flier in the district newsletter and in the Pennysaver.
