Evans checkpoints nab eight suspected of DWI

Story tools:

The Town of Evans was the wrong place to be at the beginning of last weekend — if you were driving drunk.

Police from Evans and six other local agencies arrested eight people at two checkpoints set up over the weekend on charges of driving while intoxicated, officials have announced.

Officers from Evans, Lackawanna, Orchard Park, Hamburg, West Seneca, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and state police staffed two checkpoints in Evans from 9 p. m. Friday to 5 a. m. Saturday.

One was on Route 5 at Beach Road and the other was on Lake Shore Road at Herr Road, Evans police Lt. Michael Masullo said. Some of the people charged with DWI also face drug possession charges, he added.

The weekend checkpoints were part of a summerlong DWI enforcement campaign, according to the Erie County STOP-DWI program.
