NORTH TONAWANDA — Disappointment was the word North Tonawanda High School Principal James Fisher used Friday in describing an overnight theft earlier in the week of nearly $7,000 that was to be used for a reception for senior girls.

Fisher said Friday afternoon that it was likely someone associated with the school broke into the first-floor senior class office overnight Wednesday and stole a cash box that contained $6,905 for a Senior Girls’ Reception that was held Friday night in Classics V Restaurant, Amherst.

“This morning on the announcements I appealed to the class for leads, for information to share with the school,” Fisher said Friday.

“Everybody is so disappointed,” he said. “It was found Thursday morning by the senior class adviser, but what is so shocking is that the theft was likely someone who is connected with the senior class. That’s what’s so disappointing.”

He said the reception went on as planned, with about 300 people in attendance.

Fisher said the girls in the senior class and their mothers had been selling tickets for the past two weeks to raise money for the event, but now the senior class will pick up the cost.

“The senior class has a healthy budget and will be able to cover the event, but this may affect the future,” Fisher said. “Each year, the senior class presents a gift to the school. Last year, the class was able to pay for landscaping for the school out of this budget.”

Senior Girls’ Reception is an evening where girls take time to remember their mothers or another important woman in their lives.

Fisher said that the thief targeted the senior class office, breaking the window and then breaking into two locked cabinets that contained beverages and the cash box.
