HSBC grant will fund third-graders’ field trips

Story tools:

A $10,000 grant from HSBC Bank will bring an estimated 1,200 Buffalo School District third-graders to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens for hands-on field trips.

The check for “Project Empower,” an educational pilot program, will be presented during a reception in the Botanical gardens on Tuesday. The money will pay for bus transportation, admission, a tour of the conservatory and three hands-on activities. The children will learn about plant parts, fruits and grains to encourage an appreciation of plants.

Application deadline for the field trips, which will take place early in the new year, is Dec. 12. Botanical Gardens officials hope to secure enough funding in future years to accommodate all the district’s third-graders.
