CATTARAUGUS COUNTY

Heitzenrater bids on 5 parcels of land

FARMERSVILLE — The man who submitted five bids Saturday for parcels sold along Route 98 was the president of Integrated Waste Systems and had previously sought to develop a landfill at the site.

William Heitzenrater, of Niagara County, met minimum bids for five parcels offered by Cattaraugus County, which foreclosed on the properties for back taxes last year. The county retained possession of one parcel in the center of the 423 acres. There were no bids on two other parcels.

Of the seven parcels offered, Heitzenrater said he wanted only five. He said he “wants to reassemble the properties and look for a development.”

He did not rule out speculation for landfill development.

Heitzenrater said he owns about 10 acres on Route 98 across from the auctioned sites.

The development of the site for a landfill has been fought by the county for nearly 20 years, with about $500,000 spent to prevent it. If the parcels are sold, the county is expected to add provisions to new deeds restricting use for landfills, as well as mining and drilling for gas and oil wells.

County Treasurer Joseph G. Keller said Heitzenrater submitted a check for $34,022, representing 10 percent of the bids, which ranged from $18,650 to $89,710.

The county has reserved the right to reject any and all bids on the parcels. Legislators, when they meet a week from today, are expected to consider the bids along with those from other parcels that also were sold Saturday.

Other foreclosed properties auctioned included parcels in South Dayton, Perrysburg, New Albion and Great Valley, and two in the City of Olean. Four other vacant lots in Olean drew no bids.
