TIGERS IN NORTHTOWNS: Northtowns residents will have the opportunity to see two rare Siberian tigers this weekend. The 6-year-old tigers, Sebastian and Shantal, will be exhibited from 6 to 9 p. m. today at the Clarence Center October CenterFest, Goodrich and Clarence Center roads. The tigers will be exhibited Saturday and Sunday outside the John& Mary’s Subs restaurant, 2363 Millersport Highway, Getzville. The events are free, but donations will be accepted for JNK’s Call of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Chautauqua County, where the tigers live.
OLEAN PROGRAM:“ Lowering Cancer Risk With a Plant-Based Diet—What the Public Is Not Being Told” is the topic of a talk by George Eisman at 7 p. m. today in the Jamestown Community College Cutco Theater, 528 N. Barry St., Olean. Eisman, a dietitian and nutritional consultant, founded the Association of Vegetarian Dietitians and Nutrition Educators and co-founded the Vegetarian Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association.
GREEN TOUR: Three local buildings will be recognized for their use of energy-efficient construction and technology at 10 a. m. Saturday during the kickoff ceremony for the Western New York Tour of Solar Homes and Green Buildings at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Ave. Cited will be a straw-bale house in Depew, a former Buffalo school building at 257 Lafayette Ave. that has been converted for mixed uses and the Burchfield Penney Art Center itself, the first art museum in the state to be certified for energy efficiency. The tour, sponsored by the Western New York Sustainable Energy Association, is self-guided, free and open to the public. Tour locations will be open between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. CENSORSHIP EXHIBIT: Olean Public Library will display a censorship exhibit by the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship from Saturday through Oct. 23 in the Main Library room, 134 N. Second St.
CIVIL WAR SPEECH: Chris Mackowski, an associate professor of journalism St. Bonaventure University, will speak to the Allegany Area Historical Association on “What We Think We Know About the Civil War: Mass Media’s Modern Portrayal of History” at 2 p. m. Sunday in the Heritage Center, 25 N. Second St., Allegany. The meeting is free and open to the public.
CHRISTIAN COLLEGES: High school students and their parents are invited to a Christian College Fair from 7 to 9 p. m. Tuesday at Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, 8445 Greiner Road, Clarence. The fair will include representatives from more than 30 Christian colleges and a financial aid workshop. The fair and seminar are free and open to the public. Wednesdayin Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, 341 Delaware Ave. “Just Browsing” is about independent bookstores in Buffalo and the people who visit them. “Irreplaceable” documents the last days of the New World Record store.
