Planning Board continues review town’s comprehensive plan draft
POMFRET — The Town of Pomfret Planning Board on Tuesday night continued to review the draft of the town’s comprehensive plan.
Wendy Salvati of Wendel Duchscherer Architects and Engineers in Amherst was on hand for the exercise.
The plan provides the overall vision of the town, with growth emphasized in some areas over others and a focus on the preservation of agriculture.
The prime farmland, combined with the unique climate of the Lake Erie plain, supports one of the few Concord grape-growing regions in the world, officials noted.
The health of the vineyard and fruit-growing industry has resulted in the location of food and beverage processors, wineries and self-pick farms — helping to sustain the economic stability of the town.
The draft plan states, “Agricultural preservation strategies must be established to preserve valuable farm soils from being permanently damaged or eliminated, and to ensure the continue growth and viability of farming in the town.”
The board received written comments and suggestions for the plan from John Brennan of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets. Brennan also suggested that the town institute a local right-to-farm law to reflect townwide support of agriculture.
The board also discussed considering the hamlet of Laona and portions of Cassadaga as “traditional neighborhood designs — which would provide greater flexibility in zoning.
