Two residents complain about abandoned house
Board urged to buy Babcock Street property, tear it down and then build a parking lot
SILVER CREEK — Two residents living near an abandoned house on Babcock Street in the village complained to the Village Board on Monday about the way the property looks.
Mayor Kurt Lindstrom said he would ask that the zoning code enforcement office to look into possible violations at 43 Babcock.
Marge Foxton, who lives at 45 Babcock, said the home has not been inhabited for six or seven years. She said she appreciated that the village mowed the lawn, but recently the windows on the house were covered with boards, and that made the house look worse.
Foxton said she thought the house would be auctioned at a public tax sale and urged the village to buy it, tear it down and build a parking lot for people who use the nearby basketball court.
On the topic of the basketball court, Ralph Crawford, working foreman of the Streets Department, said replacement items for the damaged fence have been ordered and his crews will start work on the court soon.
The playground was shut down earlier this summer when several young people complained about the condition of the fence and concrete.
The board authorized the expenditure of $3,860 for an ultrasound inspection of the sewage treatment tanks.
EnSol Inc. of North Tonawanda will perform the tests.
A public hearing will be held at 7:45 p. m. July 20 to discuss the fee schedule for violation of new rental property law. The new law requires that all rental homes be inspected by the local code enforcement officer or a state or federal agency, and that a certificate of compliance be issued. Certificates will be issued free unless code violations exist.
