Vote to be held on water district plan
POMFRET — Property owners of the North End Water District will vote from noon to 8 p. m. on Aug. 18 on whether to move ahead with the new water district project.
During a meeting of the Town Board Wednesday night, it was noted the town clerk’s office on June 11 received a petition calling for a vote on the district, signed by more than 200 property owners of the district.
Under the rules of the vote, to be held in Town Hall, each property owner is entitled to one vote— regardless the number of parcels owned, town Counsel Jeffrey Passafaro said. Also, a corporation would be entitled to one vote.
The council approved the proposed water district on May 13, after a public hearing was held earlier.
At that time, Supervisor Donald Steger said he was happy the the district — “a long time in coming” — had been approved, that “a safe and ample water supply” would be provided to residents of the new district.
But on Wednesday night, some residents of the water district said they felt the petitions were signed by many who did not fully understand what they were signing.
One resident charged that some of the petition signatures were not properly witnessed and, in some cases, no identification was asked of those signing the document.
“How can my wife get her name off the petition?” asked a Webster Road resident, who said his wife signed the document not fully understanding what it said. The resident was told it was now too late because the deadline had passed.
The initial phase of the water district would extend Fredonia municipal water to areas in the town along routes 20 and 60, as well as Webster Road. Water would be provided to more than 200 residences and about 130 mobile homes, connected by 55,000 feet of water line.
In other business, the board:
• Will further investigate solar energy as an electricity supplement for town buildings, and also check into methods of energy conservation, such as energy-efficient light bulbs. Councilman William Hart said the Darwin Barker Library is also interested in checking into solar energy for its building.
• Learned that Town Justices Ron Johnson and David Prince will provide the council with job descriptions of personnel in their department. The justices hope to upgrade a court clerk title to chief clerk to add supervisory responsibilities.
• Canceled its meeting scheduled for Tuesday. The next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p. m. Aug. 5 in Town Hall.
