12 arrested on DWI charges
An Alden woman whose vehicle slammed into a tractor-trailer late Thursday night was pulled unconscious from her vehicle — one of at least 12 people arrested for driving while intoxicated overnight and Friday in Western New York.
Four of those arrests were made by the state police in Batavia, following the Kenny Chesney concert Thursday night at Darien Lake. State troopers from other stations and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office logged the other arrests.
The most serious incident occurred at about 11:10 p. m. Thursday, when a westbound vehicle on Route 20 in the Village of Alden crossed the center line and struck a stopped tractor-trailer facing east.
The driver, Christina M. Levan of Alden, was unconscious when Trooper Ryan Hadsall pulled her from the vehicle and smelled alcohol on her breath. She was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where she was being treated in the emergency room.
Levan was charged with felony DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation and failure to keep right, according to police.
In an unrelated incident, Troopers Shawn Paa and David Swing charged Laura
E. Creagh of Buffalo with DWI, after observing her vehicle cross the center line several times on North Road in the Town of Alden at about 10:45 p. m.
Elsewhere, David Grohuska, 39, was charged with DWI following a traffic stop, after troopers said he failed to dim his headlights on Genesee Street in Alden at about 3:05 a. m. State police also charged John E. Becker of West Seneca with DWI after troopers said his vehicle crossed the center line on Route 20 in the Town of Darien, in Genesee County, at about 11:10 p. m. Thursday. And at 10:25 p. m. that night, Trooper Michael O’Bryan charged Salvatore Greco, 38, of Kenmore, with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation and marijuana possession, following a traffic stop on the Niagara Thruway in Buffalo.
Erie County sheriff’s deputies also logged three DWI arrests.
Buffe L. Perry, 37, of Clinton Street, Buffalo, was charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation after allegedly recording a 0.20 percent blood-alcohol level, more than double the legal limit. Deputy Gene Nati stopped Perry’s vehicle at about 2:20 a. m. on Holtz Drive in Cheektowaga, after spotting the vehicle earlier traveling at about 20 mph on the eastbound Kensington Expressway in Cheektowaga, according to police reports.
Nati charged Robert N. Doel, 38, of Tonawanda Creek Road, Amherst, with felony DWI. Doel was previously convicted of DWI in 2001. Nati stopped Doel’s vehicle on Crittenden Road in Newstead at about 12:30 a. m. Friday.
Just before noon Friday, a Buffalo man was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated when he was questioned by a deputy for being double parked on Pearl Street downtown. Michael A. Sapp, 32, also was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation and criminal impersonation.
State police in Batavia charged two Erie County residents with DWI in the Town of Darien, following the Darien Lake concert. They were identified as Chad W. Robinson, 22, of Lancaster, and Norine V. Bushen, 54, of Hamburg.
The other two people arrested after the concert are from Rochester and Almond, on the Allegany-Steuben County line.
