Rain reuse eyed to limit sewer flow
SILVER CREEK — Rain barrels could be a partial solution to the problem of excess rainwater running into the Village of Silver Creek sanitary sewer system.
The old-fashioned water collection method may also help residents keep their gardens watered.
During a meeting of the Village Board on Monday, residents heard from Cornell Cooperative Extension about a project that will include collecting rainwater for gardening.
Extension representative Betsy Hite said rain barrel workshops will be offered to encourage their use.
Dave Rowlinson of Sterns and Wheeler, the engineering firm reviewing the sanitary sewer system, said his company also backs the rainwater collection project.
The first free workshop on rainwater collection will be held June 6 at a site yet to be determined.
Acting Mayor Elizabeth Turzillo, who conducted Monday’s meeting, also won unanimous approval from the board on a resolution to seek predevelopment funding for an engineering study on the sewer system.
Kerri Bentkowski of Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper emphasized the importance of using collection barrels, which can be purchased from food-producing companies in the area, and reusing rainwater.
In other matters, the board:
• Approved the annual fund drive for the Silver Creek Fire Department. Volunteers will conduct their “boot drive” Sunday, with a door-to-door fund drive planned for the month of June.
• Agreed to allocate $1,800 for new electrical service in the village square.
• Heard from resident Warren Kelly, who asked when the curb in front of his Buffalo Street home would be redone. Village crews installed curbing last year; however, the project was “less than perfect,” with “snaky” curbs resulting.
He asked that the curbs be redone and requested topsoil and grass seed.
Ralph Crawford, work crew foreman, said he would look into the project this week.
• Denied the request of the AMVETS post for a waiver on the 30-day waiting period for a liquor license.
• Denied the request from Sandy Newcomb to use the village pavilion for a private party.
